We sponsor a Junior Optimist Club (JOOI Club) at UMS-Wright School

This middle school based club has its own active “school and community

service” program.

College Scholarships

We award three college scholarships each year to high school seniors based on their community service, their goals, their academic achievements, and character.

Oratorical Contest

We hold an oratorical contest each year for boys and girls. The winners at the Optimist District Level (statewide competition) receive college scholarship support.

Essay Contest

Each year we sponsor an essay contest among high school students. The winners of these contests at the District Level receive partial scholarships for college.

Youth Appreciation Week

Each year outstanding senior high school students are selected to spend a day “shadowing” elected and appointed public officials (mayors, judges, council members, legislators, police and fire chiefs, etc.). The officials and the high school students are recognized at a luncheon sponsored by the Optimist Clubs of Mobile.

Respect for Law

We recognize Traffic Safety Resource Officers for their work in protecting the students in our community as they cross traffic getting to their respective schools.
